Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about setting up your child's learning journey with Flitter Tuition.
Tuition is an added layer to your child’s learning journey, helping to strengthen their knowledge, build confidence and give them greater security when they are back in the classroom at school. My approach to tuition is about much more than academic progress. I want children to grow in confidence, build their self-esteem and develop secure foundations so they can believe in themselves as learners. As a teacher, I know how difficult it can be to give every child the individual time and feedback they need in a busy classroom of 30 or more children. Tuition provides the opportunity to slow things down, revisit learning where needed and give children the time and attention to really understand what they are doing. In my sessions, children learn in a calm environment with far fewer distractions, allowing me to notice the small things, adapt the learning as we go and celebrate those all-important light-bulb moments.
My teaching style is all about making learning feel fun, engaging and achievable.Sessions are mostly practical, using games, hands-on activities and a range of resources tailored to your child’s individual needs, interests and learning goals. I take time to understand how each child learns best, what they enjoy and where they may need a little more support or challenge.Lots of our written work is completed on whiteboards, helping children feel comfortable to have a go, make mistakes and try again without the pressure of everything needing to be perfect. Worksheets and writing paper are still used when they are the right tool for the learning.I focus on building confidence alongside academic skills and creating a calm, friendly environment where children feel comfortable, supported and able to enjoy learning.
I tutor primary-aged children from the summer term of Reception through to Year 6.
For children attending small group sessions, I offer English, Maths and Phonics tuition, with sessions tailored to build confidence, strengthen foundations and support each child’s individual learning needs.I also offer daytime sessions for children who are home educated or following a flexi-schooling approach. These sessions are shaped around your child and can focus on English, Maths, Phonics or a mixture of subjects, depending on their interests, needs and learning goals.
Group sessions are kept small, with a maximum of four children per session. This means each child still receives plenty of individual attention while benefiting from learning alongside others.Small groups give children opportunities to share ideas, work together, learn independently and build important skills such as confidence, resilience and problem solving, all within a calm and supportive environment. Each session is still carefully tailored to your child’s individual learning goals, needs and interests.
During term time I mainly offer small group tutoring because I believe strongly in the benefits of children learning alongside others in a calm, supportive setting.One-to-one sessions are available during the daytime for home-educated and flexi-schooled children. I may offer one-to-one sessions during school holidays for children who usually attend school.I will recommend one-to-one support if I feel your child would benefit from a more individualised approach at that time.
I strongly believe in the benefits of small group tutoring. As a teacher, I have seen first-hand how powerful small group learning can be when children are given the right balance of support, independence and encouragement. In a one-to-one setting, some children can become very reliant on the adult for reassurance, praise and checking that they are doing things correctly. They may make excellent progress during that time, but when they return to the classroom without that same level of support, the confidence and independence they need can be harder to maintain.Small group tutoring helps children build those skills in a more natural way. They still receive plenty of individual attention, but they also learn to have a go independently, share ideas, solve problems, listen to others and build resilience. Each session is still tailored to your child’s individual learning goals, needs and interests, but they also benefit from learning alongside others in a calm, supportive environment. My aim is not just for children to make progress with me, but to develop the confidence and independence to carry that progress back into school too.Where I feel a child would benefit more from one-to-one support, I will always discuss this with you.
All tutoring sessions take place in my dedicated home learning space in Biggin Hill. For added peace of mind, I hold an enhanced DBS, paediatric first aid certification and public liability insurance.I also offer a free initial meet and greet, giving you and your child the chance to see the space, ask any questions and get a feel for whether the environment and my approach feel like the right fit for your family.
Once your child’s place is confirmed, I will send you a welcome email with the day and time of their regular tutoring session. You will also receive copies of my Privacy Policy and Safeguarding Policy for your records, along with links to two short forms that need to be completed before your child starts: the enrolment form and my Terms and Conditions. Before joining their regular session, your child’s first session will be one-to-one and may take place on a different day. This gives me the chance to complete a fun, engaging assessment to see what they already know, where they may need support or challenge, and how I can plan their learning going forward.Once this is complete, everything is in place for your child to get started with their regular sessions.
Yes. All new students begin with a four-week trial period so you and your child have time to see how they settle into sessions before committing to a permanent space. The four sessions are paid for in advance. During this initial four-week period, the usual four weeks’ notice to cancel your child’s place does not apply, giving you a little extra flexibility while you decide whether the sessions feel right for your child.
I start with a fun, low-pressure assessment based on age-related objectives in the subjects you would like me to focus on. This helps me identify any gaps in learning, as well as areas where your child may benefit from further challenge.I use this alongside any school feedback and observations you share with me to plan clear next steps and shape future sessions around your child’s individual needs.Progress is continually assessed in a gentle, informal way during sessions, with more focused assessment checks used at key points to see how learning is becoming secure and where we need to go next.I also keep things flexible. If something tricky comes up at school, or there is an area you would particularly like us to revisit, just let me know and I can build this into their learning.Parents receive verbal feedback where possible, along with short weekly session summaries covering what we have worked on, successes and next steps.
If you need to cancel a session, please let me know as soon as possible. I will always try my best to reschedule sessions missed due to illness where availability allows, although this cannot always be guaranteed.Full details about cancellations, notice periods and any applicable charges are included in my Terms and Conditions, which you will receive before your child starts tutoring.
Tutoring sessions are paid monthly in advance, with payment due by the 1st of each month. I will send you an invoice beforehand so you have everything you need to make payment.
I provide all equipment, stationery and learning resources, so there is no need to bring anything along.I do encourage children to bring a bottle of water. If they would like to bring a small comfort item, such as a favourite teddy, they are very welcome to come along and join in with their learning too!
Yes! You can find Flitter Tuition on Facebook and Instagram @FlitterTuition.I regularly share examples of children’s work, snippets from our fun and engaging sessions, 5-star parent reviews, helpful tips and a little behind-the-scenes look at learning at Flitter Tuition.
I take children’s privacy very seriously. Any photos or videos I share on my website, social media or marketing focuses on the learning rather than identifying the child.Where possible, I photograph activities, hands, resources or children from angles where their face is not identifiable. I also make sure children are comfortable before taking any photos or videos during their sessions.Parents can choose whether or not they are happy for photos or videos of their child’s learning to be used, and this preference is recorded when joining Flitter Tuition. Photo and video preferences can be updated at any time if a parents changes their mind. A child’s own wishes will always be respected too.
Absolutely. I am a fully qualified primary school teacher and am happy to show you my Enhanced DBS certificate, teaching qualification certificates, safeguarding training certificate and paediatric first aid certificate on request.
Homework is not something I routinely set, as I want children to leave sessions feeling positive and confident about their learning.I do, however, share areas of focus with parents so you know what we are working on and where a little extra practice at home may be helpful. If you would like your child to have formal homework between sessions, this can absolutely be discussed.
